McDowell Public Library

Learn about the rich history of our historical town of Welch, WV and so much more!

History:

The first library in Welch was established by the McDowell Women’s Club

in 1936 - with a total of 36 books. A second library opened in 1954 in the

Welch Masonic Building before a new library was constructed in 1955.

However, this building, along with the Welch City Hall and fire station, was destroyed in a devastating fire in the summer of 1979. Ground was broken on a new facility in 1981, and

the new McDowell County library opened for business in July of 1982. Today, the McDowell County Library system operates 4 branches in Bradshaw, Iaeger, Northfork, and War,

serving over 21,000 residents in McDowell County.
